LA CAMBRE
Ecole nationale supérieure des arts visuels
(School of Visual Arts)

Founded in 1927 by the architect and decorator Henry van de Velde, the Ecole nationale supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre is one of Belgium’s leading schools of art and design. It has around 700 students following courses in its 17 artistic departments that include drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, engraving, binding, and photography, as well as art restoration and, in the design field, the sections of industrial and textile design, interior architecture, scenography and fashion design. There are also two graphics departments: graphic and visual communication, and typography and graphic design.

Students also follow a number of compulsory or optional cross-disciplinary courses in a number of artistic practices including the digital arts, drawing, colour, video, performing and body arts, book arts and illustration. In addition to the artistic training, students receive solid theory and  technical training, both general and specialized, and are encouraged to spend periods outside the school as part of their course, whether through Erasmus, assisting artists or on company placements, etc.

The studies cover five years and are organized in two cycles: Bachelor (3 years, 180 credits) and Master (2 years, 120 credits). The school also offers postgraduate teacher training courses and a doctorate in art and the art sciences in cooperation with the university.

La Cambre occupies a historic site of the same name. Since the 1980s it has expanded to also include two other sites in the vicinity.
It has an exceptional library (about 60,000 works) and major archives, including the graphic and photographic archives of its founder. It holds many public events (conferences, exhibitions, fashion shows, etc.) and regularly publishes books and essays.

La Cambre is a member of the Brussels-Wallonia European university pole and a partner, within the transdisciplinary platform ART.es, of the Brussels Conservatory and the INSAS (National Institute of the Performing Arts)

La Cambre is a higher school of art within the educational system of Belgium’s French-speaking Community.
